Is a Deluxe Album Box Set Worth Giving as a Gift?

A favorite album can be a great gift. A giant box of that album, extra recordings, and live shows? That takes a little more thought.

On September 30, Pitchfork reported that the Flaming Lips’ At War With the Mystics would receive a 20th anniversary deluxe edition on November 13. The announced six-LP and six-CD sets include rare recordings and two live albums.

It’s the kind of release that makes a good starting point for a gift-shopping question: Who actually wants all those extras?

A dedicated fan may love them. Someone who knows an album inside out might enjoy hearing an early demo or a live version. For a casual listener, the regular album could be a better fit.

Start by checking the format. Six records won’t do much for someone who only owns a CD player. A large CD collection may also disappoint a person who collects vinyl.

Then look at what’s included. Does the set offer recordings the fan would want to hear, or does the packaging seem to be the main attraction? Neither answer is wrong. Some people love displaying their collections. Others care mostly about what comes out of the speakers.

It’s also worth finding out which version they already have. Collectors may know exactly what edition they want. A quick conversation can be more helpful than trying to surprise them with an expensive guess.

For an upcoming release, check the delivery date before planning around a birthday or holiday. An announced release date doesn’t guarantee that your order will arrive that day.

And remember that a bigger gift isn’t automatically a better one. A standard album paired with a thoughtful note can mean plenty.

A deluxe box set makes the most sense when you know the recipient loves that particular album and enjoys exploring the details. That’s when the extra material becomes part of the gift rather than just more things in a box.
